We’ll Be Back in January (And We Need Your Help!)

2016 is going to be a very exciting year for so many bookish reasons, one though we are sure you agree (ahem) of the highlights though will be the return of Hear Read This and Gav, Kate, Rob and Simon joining forces once a month to talk books… Only they are back with a difference and they want you to be more involved in all sorts of ways. The first being by choosing the book that they talk about each episode.

But hang on, before we get to the fun part of voting let us tell you about a few little tweaks and changes coming. Firstly they will only talk about one book a month; warts, spoilers and all. They will still sing a books praise (A Month in the Country) or slate it from the roof tops (The Martian) or bicker and differ they will just go into more detail  – as they heard thats what you want – and they will still tell you what else they have been reading etc. They would just really love you to join in too. Firstly, as we already said by you voting for the book, and here are the choices…

Now we aren’t saying which host chose which book, though you might be able to guess, as we want you to simply choose the book on the books merrits, so which is it to be? Will it be some good old gothic with ghosts, apocalypses and more in Shirley Jackson’s The Sundial? A thrilling, dangerous and illicit love affair in Patricia Highsmiths cult classic Carol? A collection of mythical beasts from all over the world in Gods, Memes and Monsters? Or will it be a world in where the Nazi’s won the war as envisioned by Philip K Dick with The Man in the Castle? You can choose by voting in the comments below.

You have until the special A Little Life episode of Hear Read This goes live, with Simon and Rob, between Christmas and New Year. The winning title, along with how else you can be involved, will be announced on New Years Day, so you (and our hosts) can get spending your book vouchers asap and get reading! So which book is it to be?

Hear…Read This! Ep.2

Hello and welcome to the return of Hear…Read This!  We’re thrilled to present four hosts, two books and one bookclub every month! This month the books up for discussion are I Remember You by Yrsa Sigurdardottir and The House of Rumour by Jake Arnott.  Take a listen and you’ll hear Simon and Gav of The Readers, a Book Based Banter podcast, and Kate and Rob of Adventures With Words, exploring storytelling in all its forms.  Beware, as there are mild spoilers for both books!

Don’t forget, you can follow us on Twitter, like the page on Facebook, and subscribe to the podcast on iTunes!

Section 1: I Remember You by Yrsa Sigurdardottir Two episodes in and their could be fisticuffs already as Simon brings one of his favourite authors, and her first horror story, to the group and to a really mixed response. Can a supernatural novel work with a crime procedural element to it? Would you stay in a spooky house in the middle of nowhere and stay if things got scary? Can a modern ghost story ever really work? All this and the characters, prose and an insight into Icelandic culture and society are discussed.

Section 2: What Else We’ve Been Reading Before they move on to the second choice, the hosts discuss some of the other books they have been reading, both the good and the bad. Gavin has been reading Equoid by Charles Stross, Rob has been reading Dominion by C.J. Sansom, Kate has been reading Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo and Simon has read Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walter.

Section 3: The House of Rumour by Jake Arnott
In our second discussion, which were once again varied about Rob’s choice of The House of Rumour a book about the occult, Nazi’s, books, science fiction, spies and Ian Fleming. Can you enjoy an adventure when you find the characters shallow?  Is this fantasy-lite, or is it send-up?  Can a plot hang together too neatly?  Is there something better about paper books, or does digital hold the key to the future?  And finally, just how many times can you use the word Google in 300 pages?

And finally…

We reveal our choices for next month.  Kate has chosen the ‘new’ book Marina by Carlos Ruiz Zafon, and Gavin has chosen the ‘old’ book The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K Le Guin. We’d love you to read them and join us next time on Friday the 13th (uh-oh) of December!

Episode 1 is Coming Soon…

Airing for the very first time this Friday, the first episode of the podcast mashup that is ‘Hear… Read This’ begins. Featuring Simon and Gavin of The Readers with Rob and Kate of Adventures With Words coming together! Four hosts, two books and one hour of debate… it is going to be great!!!

The first episode will feature discussion of HHhH by Laurent Binet and Mr Penumbra’s 24 Hour Bookshop by Robin Sloan. If you have anything you would like your hosts to discuss on either of the books do please let us know in the comments below…
