Hear…Read This! Ep.2

Hello and welcome to the return of Hear…Read This!  We’re thrilled to present four hosts, two books and one bookclub every month! This month the books up for discussion are I Remember You by Yrsa Sigurdardottir and The House of Rumour by Jake Arnott.  Take a listen and you’ll hear Simon and Gav of The Readers, a Book Based Banter podcast, and Kate and Rob of Adventures With Words, exploring storytelling in all its forms.  Beware, as there are mild spoilers for both books!

Don’t forget, you can follow us on Twitter, like the page on Facebook, and subscribe to the podcast on iTunes!

Section 1: I Remember You by Yrsa Sigurdardottir Two episodes in and their could be fisticuffs already as Simon brings one of his favourite authors, and her first horror story, to the group and to a really mixed response. Can a supernatural novel work with a crime procedural element to it? Would you stay in a spooky house in the middle of nowhere and stay if things got scary? Can a modern ghost story ever really work? All this and the characters, prose and an insight into Icelandic culture and society are discussed.

Section 2: What Else We’ve Been Reading Before they move on to the second choice, the hosts discuss some of the other books they have been reading, both the good and the bad. Gavin has been reading Equoid by Charles Stross, Rob has been reading Dominion by C.J. Sansom, Kate has been reading Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo and Simon has read Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walter.

Section 3: The House of Rumour by Jake Arnott
In our second discussion, which were once again varied about Rob’s choice of The House of Rumour a book about the occult, Nazi’s, books, science fiction, spies and Ian Fleming. Can you enjoy an adventure when you find the characters shallow?  Is this fantasy-lite, or is it send-up?  Can a plot hang together too neatly?  Is there something better about paper books, or does digital hold the key to the future?  And finally, just how many times can you use the word Google in 300 pages?

And finally…

We reveal our choices for next month.  Kate has chosen the ‘new’ book Marina by Carlos Ruiz Zafon, and Gavin has chosen the ‘old’ book The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K Le Guin. We’d love you to read them and join us next time on Friday the 13th (uh-oh) of December!
