Hear… Read This! Ep. 18

Hello and welcome to the March edition of Hear…Read This! It features four hosts and two books, making one book club every month.

This month, we’re discussing The Martian by Andy Weir and I’m The King of the Castle by Susan Hill. Take a listen and you’ll hear Simon of SavidgeReads and The Readers, Gav of GavReads and Rob and Kate of Adventures With Words sharing their thoughts.

Don’t forget, you can follow us on Twitter, like the page on Facebook, and subscribe to the podcast on iTunes!

Section 1: The Martian by Andy Weir

This was Rob’s choice – he had heard many a great things about this book, along with a forthcoming film version. Will we be rooting for our stranded astronaut or hoping he ends up Cast Away?

Section 2: What Else We’ve Been Reading

Before we move on to our second book of the episode, the hosts discuss some of the other books they have been reading this month: Rob shared his thoughts on The Sculptor by Scott McCloud, Simon recommends The Miniaturist by Jessie Burton, The Department of Speculation by Jenny Offill and Station Eleven by Emily St John Mandel, Gav is enjoying The Three by Sarah Lotz and Kate discusses A Place Called Winter by Patrick Gale and After Me Comes the Flood by Sarah Perry.

Section 3: I’m The King of the Castle by Susan Hill

This was Simon’s classic choice and a book that many may know from school syllabuses. What will we thing of Susan Hill’s slice of darkness as two young boys take a sinister dislike to one another?

Finally, this is our season finale as we take a break for the summer months. But fear not, Hear… Read This! will return in the autumn!

  1. Hooray! And there was much jubilation in the literary land of AP!

I thought I was the only person in the world who was utterly underwhelmed by The Martian. I struggled through to the end just in case the book took a turn that would change my early opinions. It didn’t. However, have been wondering whether there is “something wrong” with my literary judgement as everywhere I turned there were these rave reviews. So happy to learn I’m not alone – thanks guys!
Great show BTW – I’ll miss it during your ‘break’, but completely understand why you’ve gone on hiatus. Look forward to your return when you have more time.
    Cheers, AP

  2. I just randomly stumbled across this podcast and I have to tell you guys: I am so relieved that I’m not the only one who just absolutely hated The Martian (and for all the same reasons you list). That alone would be enough for me to listen to more episodes, but the rest of the episode was also good and made me interested in checking out some of your recommendations. Thanks for that! 🙂
