Hello and welcome to the December edition of Hear…Read This! It usually features four hosts and two books, making one book club every month, however we’re down to three hosts as unfortunately Rob is feeling unwell – get well soon, Rob!
This month, we’re discussing what we thought of The Rabbit Back Literature Society by Pasi Ilmaari Jaaskeleinen, translated by Lola Rogers, and The Floating Admiral by Members of the Detection Club. Take a listen and you’ll hear Simon of SavidgeReads and The Readers, Gav of GavReads and Kate of Adventures With Words sharing their thoughts, plus a few comments from Rob via Kate.
Section 1: The Rabbit Back Literature Society by Pasi Ilmaari Jaaskeleinen (translated by Lola Rogers)
This was Kate’s choice, which she’s had on the shelf for a little while – she’d heard good things about it but couldn’t resist such a festive cover for the December episode. But will the others blow hot or cold?
Section 2: What Else We’ve Been Reading
Before we move on to our second book of the episode, the hosts discuss some of the other books they have been reading this month: Rob has started Shoot To Kill, the new Young Bond novel by Steve Cole, Simon recommends Lord of the Flies by William Golding, which he read for his ‘bricks and mortar’ book club, Gav thought Brenda and Effie Forever by Paul Magrs was a really funny read and Kate was really moved by Phoenix by SF Said, illustrated by Dave McKean.
Section 3: The Floating Admiral by members of the Detection Club
This was Gav’s ‘classic’ choice, and it’s a novel written in separate chapters by a number of members of the Detection Club, including Agatha Christie, Dorothy L Sayers and G K Chesterton. But is this an exercise is unravelling the way a great thriller is plotted, or in outdoing your club members? Find out what we thought…
Here are next month’s choices by Simon and Rob:
We hope you enjoy listening.
